Physiology of Farm Animals explores the functions of animal organisms based on biophysical and biochemical principles. This book provides a concise overview of the physiological mechanisms and functions of the various systems within the bodies of farm animals.
In unicellular organisms (e.g., bacteria, protozoa), all life-sustaining functions are carried out by a single cell. In multicellular organisms, such as farm animals, cells exhibit morphological and functional differentiation (e.g., secretory, neural cells). Groups of differentiated cells form tissues, multiple tissues form organs, and sets of organs with a common functional goal form systems, which together constitute the multicellular organism.
The interaction and coordination among organs and systems result in the harmonious functioning of the entire organism (animal health), while any disruption in these functions leads to disorder (animal disease).
Physiology, therefore, is the biological science that studies the biophysical and biochemical functions of living organisms—including humans—or, more simply, the way an organism or one of its systems operates.
